The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Inc. (PIAA) announced on Wednesday, Sept. 18 that the high school level of girl’s flag football is now a sanctioned sport.

“We’re thrilled that we can offer another opportunity for girls to participate in interscholastic athletics,” PIAA President Frank Majikes said. “This is the second girls’ sport in two years to be approved.”

The PIAA explained that a sport can be considered for sanctioning once it has adopted “a set of operational and safety standards set forward by a governing body.” Those standards must be used by members of the program.

For girls flag football, PIAA required that there be at least 100 teams throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. That number was reached in April with 65 schools participating on the eastern side of the state thanks to the Eagles and 35 schools on the western side thanks to the Steelers.

The Eagles and the Steelers worked together over the last three seasons to grow the flag football program in Pa.

“When we launched our girls’ flag football league in 2022, we set an ambitious five-year goal to get the sport sanctioned in our state. Now, here we are three seasons later and two years ahead of schedule,” Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said. “The sport’s organic growth is a credit to the participants, administrators, coaches, officials, and parents who helped raise the profile of girls’ flag football. We thank the PIAA for their leadership in recognizing a sport that has the power to unlock new pathways and opportunities for girls of all ages in every community.”

When the Eagles launched their flag football program, it started with just 16 schools in the spring of 2022 from the Philadelphia Public and Catholic Leagues. In 2023, it grew to 38 before reached 65 this year. There are currently over 1,600 girls playing on the eastern side of Pennsylvania.

The Eagles have helped with learn-to-play support as well as coaching and officiating clinics and much more.

The Birds also partnered with Operation Warm to design a new sports bra line called FLY:FWD specifically for young girls and women in flag football.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are credited with starting their girls flag football in 2022 with just six schools before eventually growing to 36 schools this year.

Is this the end for Jalen Reagor after being released from Patriots' practice squad?  https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/is-this-the-end-for-jalen-reagor-after-being-released-from-patriots-practice-squad/616338/ 3973116 post 9892531 Eric Canha-Imagn Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/09/Jalen-Reagor-USATSI.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Jalen Reagor, one of the worst 1st-round picks in Eagles history, may be facing the end of the road after being released from the Patriots’ practice squad.

Reagor, the 21st pick in the 2020 draft, had just 15 catches in parts of three seasons with the Vikings and Patriots since the Eagles jettisoned him after just two seasons.

Of 160 wide receivers drafted in the first round since 1960 who’ve played in at least 50 career games, Reagor’s 937 career receiving yards are 6th-fewest and fewest among WRs drafted in the last 40 years.

The Eagles drafted Reagor instead of Justin Jefferson, whose 5,899 yards are most in NFL history by a receiver in his first four seasons.

While Jefferson was setting out on a likely Hall of Fame career, Reagor never made an impact with the Eagles and seemed unable to escape Jefferson’s enormous shadow lurking over him.

Reagor had a 55-yard catch from Carson Wentz in his first NFL game in Washington on opening day 2020, but his first career reception remains his longest career reception. And after catching 16 passes for 211 yards in his first five NFL games, he had just 15 catches for 185 yards the rest of his rookie season. He dropped to 33-for-299 in Year 2.

Reagor and Nelson Agholor are the only 1st-round receivers in the last 10 years with two separate seasons where they started at least 10 games and had fewer than 400 receiving yards.

The Eagles unloaded Reagor after just two seasons and soon after he turned 23, trading him to the Vikings for a couple late-round picks. He caught eight passes for 104 yards and a touchdown on a pass from Kirk Cousins in his one year with the Vikings, who released him after 2023 training camp.

The Patriots signed him and he had seven catches for 138 yards and no TDs last year, although he did have a 98-yard kick return for a touchdown in a loss to the Bills on New Year’s Eve.

New England released Reagor last month at the end of training camp and then re-signed him to the practice squad. He wasn’t a game-day call-up for either of the Patriots’ games this year.

Reagor has 79 career catches for 937 yards and four touchdowns to show for his first four-plus seasons. His career mark of 16.7 yards per game ranks 197th out of 226 modern-day receivers drafted since 1970. Among those 160 who’ve played at least 50 games, he ranks 152nd.

Reagor, still only 25, has earned about $14.6 million in his career, according to Spotrac, with the Eagles responsible for about $9 million of that.

Reagor ranks 90th in Eagles history with 695 career receiving yards, just behind Mark Bavaro and just ahead of Trey Burton.

What’s next for Reagor? He’s an unrestricted free agent and possibly a team in desperate need of a receiver could snap him up for minimum wage.

The Eagles? They are missing A.J. Brown for an undetermined amount of time, and Reagor did play with Jalen Hurts for two years. And we know Howie Roseman loves bringing back players for a second stint.

But not this time. It’s impossible to imagine Roseman revisiting one of the worst decisions of his career.

When is Eagles vs. Saints? How to watch the Week 3 showdown https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/how-to-watch-eagles-saints-week-3-channel-live-stream-time/3971688/ 3971688 post 9888389 Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/09/getty-jalen-hurts-derek-carr.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The Philadelphia Eagles are facing some early season adversity.

The Birds appeared well on their way to a 2-0 start before an ugly collapse late against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football. After a Saquon Barkley drop kept Atlanta’s hopes alive, Kirk Cousins and Co. marched down the field with ease for a game-winning touchdown inside the final minute.

Now, Nick Sirianni’s team will enter a tough road environment to face the NFL‘s hottest offense through two weeks in the New Orleans Saints. Following a 47-10 Week 1 rout of the Carolina Panthers, Derek Carr and the Saints went into Jerry World and hung a 40-burger on the Dallas Cowboys in a stunning 44-19 blowout.

Carr has played like an MVP candidate so far, boasting a 142.4 quarterback rating with five touchdowns, one pick and a 76.9 completion percentage. And star running back Alvin Kamara already has five total touchdowns while gaining 5.7 yards per carry.

So can the Eagles’ defense contain Carr, Kamara and the Saints’ offense enough to leave the Big Easy with a win? Or will the Birds fly back to Philly below .500?

SEPTA offers cheaper way to get to Eagles games. Here's a guide to extra trains https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-home-game-linc-parking-septa/3970999/ 3970999 post 8844418 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2023/08/BSL-SEPTA-Eagles-subway-train.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 If the price to park at Philadelphia Eagles’ home games is leading you to ride SEPTA instead, extra trains will help be getting you to games during the 2024 season.

You don’t have to run into a pillar to figure out how to get to the game for cheap.

The Eagles take on the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field for the home opener on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. Here’s your guide to getting down to the stadium complex for the nationally-televised game.

SEPTA adds extra service for Philadelphia Eagles home games

“SEPTA is ready for the start of the 2024 Eagles season with extra Broad Street Line [B] and Regional Rail service set for Monday’s home opener against the Atlanta Falcons,” the transit agency said.

Basically, SEPTA will be running its regularly scheduled trains — every 8 minutes or less — on the Broad Street Line leading up to the 8:15 p.m. kickoff.

SEPTA will run 10 extra express trains departing Fern Rock Station every 10 minutes from 6:05 p.m. to 7:35 p.m.

Lincoln Financial Field has a handy guide on its website laying out how to take the Broad Street Line to the game, regardless of whether fans are in Philly, the suburbs or New Jersey, but SEPTA broke it down this way:

“Eagles fans can connect with the Broad Street Line from dozens of bus routes, and there is a free transfer from the Market-Frankford Line [L] and City Trolley [T] routes at 15th Street/City Hall. The Broad Street Line is also just a short walk from Regional Rail stations in Center City and easily accessible from the PATCO High Speed Line for fans from south Jersey.”

to increase the access to the subway to and from the game, SEPTA is adding additional trains on the Warminster and Paoli/Thorndale lines (Click here for that schedule).

However, as you celebrate the Birds’ win, be sure not to hang out too long before you head to the subway.

“SEPTA strongly urges riders to go directly to NRG Station after the game so they can catch the Broad Street Line and connecting services,” SEPTA said.

A subway line ride costs $2 each way with SEPTA Key, Key Tix via SEPTA App and contactless payment, and $2.50 for a Quick Trip card or cash.

How much does it cost to park at Eagles games at Lincoln Financial Field?

Parking in lots at the Linc during the 2024 NFL season costs $45 for cars and $90 for oversized vehicles like RVs and buses, according to the stadium’s website.

You can always check SpotHero to see if you can find a place to park in the area around the stadium complex.

Artist behind fake ads claiming the Eagles endorse Kamala Harris comes forward https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/philadelphia-eagles-kamala-harris-fake-ads/3969447/ 3969447 post 9850532 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/09/Kamala-billboard-9-2-24.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The person behind the fake ads that appeared to show the Philadelphia Eagles endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president in the upcoming election has come forward.

The artist who goes by @winstontseng on Instagram admitted on the social media platform this week that the ads are his artwork, but he claims that he does not know how the art showed up at bus stops.

“The absurd poster of Kamala Harris wearing an Eagles helmet is my artwork, but I don’t know how it ended up at bus stops in Philadelphia,” the artist said on Instagram. “It’s been made very clear that Kamala Harris is not the official candidate of the Philadelphia Eagles, much to everyone’s dismay.”

The ads showed a sideview of a drawing of a person who is, presumably, Harris, holding a football and wearing an Eagles helmet along with the name, “Kamala” in big, bold letters.

The ads were spotted at the following locations in Philadelphia on Monday, Sept 2:

  • North Broad Street and West Montgomery Avenue
  • North Broad Street and Cecil B Moore Avenue
  • North 11th Street and West Girard Avenue
  • North 16th Street and West Girard Avenue
  • North Broad Street and West Girard Avenue
  • JFK Boulevard and North 18th Street
  • Walnut Street and South 34th Street

Officials began removing the ads late Monday afternoon and evening. One man even covered the ad on Walnut Street and South 34th Street with copies of the Philadelphia Eagles’ statement.

By Tuesday, all of the ads were removed.

A spokesperson for the Harris campaign told NBC News they did not purchase the ads.

The incident placed more emphasis on the issue of political misinformation as the 2024 presidential race enters its final stretch before the November election.

The artist also urged his followers to go to the team’s website to register to vote.

In the exclusive interview with Essence, Hurts said he’d known for quite some time that she was something special.

The duo met while studying at the University of Alabama. They dated on and off since then but didn’t go public with their relationship until 2023.

Quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love are hard to miss in the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo, with their faces gazing skyward as part of a 108-foot-high mural on the side of a downtown building.

They will face off Friday night when Hurts’ Philadelphia Eagles take on Love’s Green Bay Packers in the first NFL game in the soccer-crazy nation, which has an estimated 38 million fans of American football.

Crica Monteiro, a graffiti artist with more than two decades of experience, worked with six others to create the giant mural that was commissioned by the NFL in partnership with local company Dionisio AG.

The artists spent 11 days on the mural, applying the finishing touches late Tuesday.

The request to Monteiro’s team was to depict the sport with a São Paulo touch. Many outsiders and some of the city’s own 12 million residents call it a concrete jungle in the tropics. The artist used orange, red and yellow to represent the tropics and depicted São Paulo’s grey sidewalk beneath them.

Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love depicted on large mural in São Paulo, Brazil.
Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love depicted on large mural in São Paulo, Brazil.

“I mostly do graffitis of Black women, so it was totally unexpected to do this,” Monteiro told The Associated Press by phone. “These two are interesting people. What I brought was not to put them against each other. I wanted to catch the subtlety of their expressions. My characters always have a deep look.”

Monteiro said she became more interested in American football after hearing the story of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who in 2016 began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice.

“American football is in a position of defiance for me, and so is NBA basketball. When I thought about Hurts and Love up there, I thought of two Black men playing their own game and trying to win,” the artist said.

A mural of similar size covers another building in São Paulo as part of the same initiative. Artist Bruno Big painted Eagles and Packers players fighting for the ball in front of a blue backdrop.

Monteiro believes the paintings will make some Brazilians more interested in American football.

“São Paulo is different from other cities in Brazil. It is more multicultural. Our people are very curious and very creative,” she said.

Vic Fangio reveals eye-opening role for Eagles rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-news/vic-fangio-eye-opening-role-eagles-rookie-cornerback-quinyon-mitchell/612207/ 3957971 post 9850775 USA TODAY Sports https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/09/USATSI_23116273-e1725310746678.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 It was a simple question with an even simpler answer.

Question: “Do you see Quinyon as a guy who’s going to be on the field every play? Is he ready to handle that responsibility?”

Vic Fangio: “Yes and yes.”

The Quinyon Mitchell Era will begin Friday with the impressive rookie apparently earmarked to play the entire game. That likely means he’ll be outside with Darius Slay when the Packers have two receivers and he’ll be inside in the slot, with Isaiah Rodgers taking over outside, when they have three.

There may be a point where the Eagles’ other prize rookie defensive back, Cooper DeJean, is ready to take over as a full-time slot, which would allow Mitchell to focus on outside corner. But after missing most of training camp, DeJean isn’t quite there yet.

The Eagles are asking a lot of Mitchell, but they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t think he was ready.

“Is he ready?” Darius Slay said, repeating a question. “Is he ready? He’s been ready since he (was born).”

Fangio said he could tell early on that Mitchell had the rare qualities that would allow him to learn both outside corner and slot as a rookie. Mitchell didn’t play any slot at Toledo, so the coaches gave him as much work as possible inside because they knew he was OK outside. That also allowed Rodgers and Kelee Ringo to compete outside as much as possible.

“(We knew) pretty quickly because we did play him at nickel early on and he did fine in there,” Fangio said. “I do think for him personally, it would be good to lock in at one spot, because even though we’ve been very happy with his development and his learning abilities, he still is a rookie, and I do think if he can get comfortable at one spot, it would be to his benefit. But we may not be able to do that.”

Mitchell will make his NFL debut against a quarterback, Jordan Love, who finished last year with 18 touchdowns and one interception in his last eight games and an offense that averaged just under 30 points per game the last two months of the 2023 season.

He’ll be playing in front of more people than he’s ever played in front of – Toledo averaged fewer than 20,000 fans per game last year – and he’ll be playing on national TV. Or probably international TV.

It’s a heck of a way to start your NFL career. But if there are any nerves they don’t show.

“When I get out there, I just play calm and control it and just do my thing,” he said at his locker before practice Monday. “I feel really ready. I feel like I’m preparing myself and the coach is preparing me, so I feel really good.”

It’s been 12 years since a rookie started a game on defense for the Eagles – Brandon Boykin and Mychal Kendricks vs. the Browns in the 2012 opener in Cleveland. Boykin was the nickel, and Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie started outside. The last Eagles rookie to start at outside corner and not the slot was Eric Allen in the 1988 opener in Tampa.

Others since the merger were Ray Jones in 1970, Joe Lavender in 1973, Herm Edwards in 1977 and Roynell Young in 1980.

“I’m just really just ready to go, you know, really excited just for me and my teammates to go out and just perform,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been working hard and I have to keep my foot on the gas pedal.”

For a team with Super Bowl aspirations to apparently start a rookie cornerback speaks volumes about how the Eagles feel about Mitchell.

But he’s done everything you could hope for since he got here. He’s asked all the right questions, studied film with Slay and the other veteran defensive backs, practiced at a very high level.

He’ll get beat. He’ll have plays he wants back. It won’t be 100 percent positive. But the Eagles are confident they nailed this pick, and on Friday the world will get its first look at Mitchell.

“He’s been great since the day we got him,” Fangio said. “He works really hard. He’s focused in meetings, not just on the practice field. We have put a lot on his plate, like I’ve said. He hasn’t backed down from it at all. He’s going to be a good player in this league.”

The company plans to release 52 limited-edition commemorative “Philly Philly” bottles featuring the famous plays from the 2017-2018 team that led them to their Super Bowl victory six years ago.

The bottles are encased in a wooden box, each including a voucher for 52 days’ worth of Bud Light beer so fans 21 and older can salute the Eagles the right way, making it a Philly fan must-have.

Fans can also comment #PhillyPhillySweeps on all of Bud Light’s social media posts to score the one-of-a-kind, limited-edition bottle.

The celebration does not end there, though; there’s more celebration in store from iconic Eagles players.

Eagles legend Fletcher Cox will pass out Bud Light to fans 21 and older for a Philly fan’s ultimate dream – the “Philly Philly’s” experience at Xfinity Live’s NBC Sports Arena – ahead of the Eagles’ first game in Philadelphia this season on September 16, 2024.

“This year, Nick and I both decided to hang up our cleats and had the honor of doing so as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles,” said Super Bowl LII Champion and former Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. “Calling it a career has brought back so many special memories of winning Super Bowl 52 and the epic “Philly Philly” celebration from Bud Light, who rallied around us and our incredible fans throughout the championship season. It only makes sense to partner with Bud Light to run it back one more time with a can’t-miss party, giving fans a chance to cheer to the end of an era for the players who made history happen.”

Nick Foles is making his promise to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle, and he will play in the game on September 16 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fans can head to the Bud Light social channels for details on how to join in on the “Philly Philly” celebration.

Team USA men's rowing taps into Jason Kelce's underdog mentality to bring home gold at Olympics https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/paris-2024-summer-olympics/mens-rowing-gold-medal-win-eagles-underdog-inspiration/3931014/ 3931014 post 9755401 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/08/image-81.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Team USA claimed gold in the Men’s Four Rowing event. Two of the men on that team are from Chester County: Justin Best and Nick Mead.

The Philadelphia rowing community came together to show their support for the hometown heroes as friends and family gathered at the Drexel Boathouse to watch the race.

It’s the first gold medal that Team USA has won in the men’s four rowing since 1960 and the team told NBC10 that they had the focus and determination to get the job done.

Moments after Justin Best won the gold medal for the men’s four, he recited the greatest speech given by an Eagles player during the franchise’s 2017 Super Bowl celebration.

“Hungry dogs run faster,” he recited.

The Drexel graduate was there was Jason Kelce delivered the speech epitomizing the determination and grit required for an underdog to achieve victory.

“I had my girlfriend on my shoulder when he was giving that speech… and I’m just like…’I’m excited,” Best said.

Best, a Kennett Square native, and Nick Mead, a Stafford native, are row mates who say they carried that mentality into Thursday’s medal round.

Making a strong start and never letting up they narrowly edged out New Zealand and Great Britain who are two teams that have dominated the event for decades.

Best says when they woke up in the morning of August 1, they were locked in.

“We had done a couple of visualization sessions where you close your eyes and you walk through the race. You walk through how you’re feeling, you know, the calls that we made throughout the race out there,” Best explained.

It’s a meteoric rise from the last games in Tokyo where the US men’s placed fourth.

It wasn’t until last year that the four row mates joined forces to fulfill their dreams.

“Even then when we were like in the early stages of this campaign, I think we had the confidence that we could do this even if no one really believed in that,” Mead said.

And they’ll tell you that it’s all it took, that hungry dog mentality, an Eagles mindset that wants a win more than anyone else.

So, what’s next for these guys? They plan to stick around in Paris as spectators of other Olympic events.

On Monday June 24, ESPN announced four teams nominated for the 10th annual Sports Humanitarian of the Year award, and Philly’s own football team — the Philadelphia Eagles — made the cut.

“Sports has the ability to bring people together and drive positive change to make a difference in communities that need it most,” said Kevin Martinez, vice president of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “ESPN is proud that the Sports Humanitarian Awards will once again recognize athletes and sports figures who are using the power of sports to make a difference in communities across the globe.”

The Eagles notable work with their organization, the Eagles Autism Foundation, led by Chairman and CEO Jeffery Lurie earned them their nomination.

Lurie’s passion for cause is connected to his younger brother Peter, who has lived with a developmental and neurological disorder that affects how people are able to learn, behave and interact with others.

The foundation was created to not only fund scientific breakthroughs and research, but to also create a shift from awareness to action.

Through fundraising for research and by spreading awareness for the cause globally the team has been able to make a difference.

Since its inception in 2018, the organization has raised $30 million for research and care programs, and in 2024 raised just over $8.1 million with proceeds through its seventh annual 5K Eagles Autism Challenge giving access to more research projects and community grants across the world.

“The proceeds of the foundation have led to funding of 116 autism research projects and community grants around the world,” according to the Philadelphia Eagles website. “The Eagles Autism Foundation provides year-round support that includes a sensory room at Lincoln Financial Field, a neurodiverse employment program and all-abilities programs.”

Along with the Eagles being nominated, the Angel City Football Club, the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Heat were also announced as contenders for the award.

The Annual ESPYS will air live on July 11, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Eagles, the Linc receive historic environmental honor for going ‘green' https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/philadelphia-eagles-lincoln-financial-field-green-sustainability-leed-platinum-status-usgbc-environment/3888618/ 3888618 post 9625517 Philadelphia Eagles https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/06/Lincoln-Financial-Field-Philadelphia-Eagles.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Philadelphia Eagles have gone green in more ways than one and now the Birds and the stadium they call home have received a historic environmental honor for their efforts.

The team announced Tuesday, June 18, that Lincoln Financial Field has been certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum building due to its commitment to sustainability. LEED, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is the most widely used green building ratings system and provides a framework to create healthy, efficient and cost-saving buildings.

The Linc is only one of two previously constructed stadiums in the NFL to achieve Platinum status – the highest of all LEED certifications – and the only one that is more than 10 years old to receive the honor

Lincoln Financial Field has earned three levels from the USGBC since opening in 2003, winning LEED silver in 2013, LEED Gold in 2018 and now LEED Platinum in 2024.

“LEED is a transformative tool that ensures a building is designed and operated to achieve high performance, improve human health, and protect the environment,” Peter Templeton, the President and CEO of USGBC, said. “By prioritizing sustainability, the Philadelphia Eagles are leading the way in their industry and helping USGBC continue towards our goal of green buildings for everyone within this generation.”

Throughout the years, the Linc has implemented strategies and solutions in sustainable site development, water saving, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. The Eagles are also the first professional sports team in North America to install a hydrogen refueling station to power its passenger vehicles while the Linc is the first NFL stadium to recycle beverage containers through the usage of reverse vending machines. The Linc also features 10,456 solar panels that produce around four megawatts of clean energy every year.

The Linc also installed water filtration fountains that eliminated the use of more than one million plastic water bottles, implemented a closed-loop recycling program that collects bottle caps and turns them into new material for use at the stadium, replaced the stadium’s lights with high-powered LED lighting technology which led to a 50% reduction in wattage, diverted 99% of waste from landfills and operates on 100% clean energy.

“This certification speaks to the collaboration that exists at all levels of the organization where sustainability is prioritized as a key business strategy,” Norman Vossschulte, Vice President of Fan Experience and Sustainability for the Philadelphia Eagles, said. “It also represents the support we receive externally, which has included the valuable insight and consultation from Lindsay Arell of Honeycomb Strategies. Lindsay has built her career on pioneering sustainability efforts for the live events industry and was integral in the process to Lincoln Financial Field becoming LEED Platinum certified.”

“Why did we do this?” asked Travis Kelce, tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, on the New Heights podcast.

“Why wouldn’t we do this?” responded Jason.

The Ohio natives came together to purchase Garage Beer. It’s one of the fastest growing light beer brands in the United States, specifically Midwest-owned and a Cincinnati favorite.

Both brothers are natives of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and attended the University of Cincinnati where they played football alongside each other for two years.

The beer is currently sold in 13 states: Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, West Virginia, Idaho, Montana and New Jersey. However, with the new ownership, there are plans to expand into new states this year.

“Listen, it tastes good. It’s beer flavored beer made with quality ingredients, small batches brewed. It is what it is,” said Jason when promoting the beer on their podcast.

The duo plans to be involved in all aspects of the business, from brewing to distribution and sales.

The NFL brothers made the official announcement on Instagram on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, with the caption, “The garage just got a lot bigger.”

NJ mayor apologizes after video shows woman yelling at Kylie Kelce in front of Jason Kelce https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/nj-mayor-apologizes-after-video-shows-woman-yelling-at-kylie-kelce-in-front-of-jason-kelce/3871045/ 3871045 post 9359817 Lisa Lake/Getty Images for Prime Video https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/03/GettyImages-1668786719-e1709921385944.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=220,300

The mayor of an Atlantic County town apologized to Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce and his wife Kylie Kelce after a viral video surfaced showing a woman confronting Kylie and yelling at her.

“On behalf of the City of Margate, I’d like to formally apologize to Jason & Kylie Kelce for the experience they had in Margate City over the holiday weekend,” Margate City Mayor Michael Collins wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. “As a father with young children, I know as well as anyone the importance of a date night with your wife and would like to offer a redo date night with dinner on me.”

On Tuesday, the popular Philly-based podcast, WTTW Podcast posted a short clip on Instagram of a woman yelling at Kylie Kelce while Jason Kelce watched.

“You’ll never be allowed in this town again,” the woman yells.

The clip doesn’t show what led to the confrontation and only lasts for a few seconds.

Hugh E. Dillon, the creator of the blog Philly ChitChat, stated the incident occurred while Kylie and Jason Kelce were spending Memorial Day weekend in Sea Isle, New Jersey, and on their way to the restaurant Steve & Cookie’s in Margate Saturday night.

Dillon wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the woman demanded a photo with Kylie Kelce who replied that she was on a date with her husband. Dillon stated the woman “wouldn’t take no for an answer” and began screaming at Kylie Kelce. Dillon said Kylie and Jason then walked into the restaurant and “enjoyed their night.”

“The best part of the video is Jason is just standing back and letting Kiley do what she does best which is shut this woman down,” Dillon said. “So much credit to Kiley, who just said her say and walked into the restaurant.”

Neither Kylie Kelce nor Jason Kelce have commented publicly on the incident or Mayor Collins’ apology.

The Sunshine Foundation is an organization that makes dreams come true for children living with life-long severe chronic illnesses and conditions including level three autism, sickle cell disease, blindness and others.

For Ryan’s dream to come true, the Corvette Club of Delaware Valley and the Corvette Enthusiasts Community Foundation made generous donations to help pay for his new bedroom.

The Sunshine Foundation says that the most common request is to visit Legoland, Universal Studios, Disney World and SeaWorld. Other requests include shopping sprees, adaptive tricycles and outdoor playsets.

‘You are not alone': Kylie Kelce addresses final graduating class at Cabrini University https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/kylie-kelce-final-graduation-cabrini-university/3863144/ 3863144 post 9550986 Cabrini University https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/05/Kylie-Kelce-Cabrini-commencement-2024.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Cabrini University celebrated one of its most beloved alums while celebrating its final graduating class on Sunday.

Kylie Kelce — wife of retired Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce and the unofficial first woman of Philly sports — offered advice to the grads of Cabrini’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the Radnor-based college‘s campus.

Kelce joked that her husband is “known for giving some pretty earth-shattering speeches. He did not help me at writing my words today, so you can go ahead and lower those expectations.”

Kelce went on to tell the grads of Cabrini’s 64th and final graduating class that the Cabrini alum remain to be a support system for the class of 2024, even if the college on the Main Line is no more.

“You are not alone in trying to navigate the conundrum of life,” she told the grads.

Kelce is a a 2017 graduate of Cabrini.

In a Facebook post while announcing Kelce as a speaker, Cabrini described her as a “standout field hockey athlete and coach, and advocate for girls and women in sports.”

“One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to become a part of the Cabrini field hockey family,” Kelce told Cabrini’s website. “The experience gave me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

This graduation marked the end of Cabrini after it was founded in 1957.

Villanova University agreed to purchase the Radnor campus last year as Cabrini University dealt with money problems.

“In a shifting and increasingly difficult higher ed landscape, Cabrini University, like so many colleges and universities, has faced significant financial challenges stemming from declining enrollment, the pandemic, and economic uncertainty,” Nova and Cabrini said in a joint statement last June. “Despite efforts to improve revenue streams, and changes to the leadership and academic ranks, Cabrini’s operating deficit remained insurmountable. With all other possible options exhausted and having determined that they must conclude their operations, Cabrini University initiated discussions with Villanova around a plan that would preserve Cabrini’s legacy and mission and honor the original intention for the Cabrini campus to promote opportunities in Catholic education.”

‘Just a start': Brandon Graham honored as MVP – Most Valuable Philadelphian https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/brandon-graham-philadelphia-mvp/3862973/ 3862973 post 9550623 Elsa/Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/05/GettyImages-911959444.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 For the first time, the Most Valuable Philadelphian is a beloved Super Bowl champion.

The Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation honored Brandon Graham with its inaugural Most Valuable Philadelphian (MVP) Award during its Philly Opener event on Monday, May 20, 2024.

What makes the longtime Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman the city’s MVP? He has been “exemplifying the city’s values and impacting people’s lives on and off the field,” the PVCC said.

Graham has spent his entire 14 years in the NFL with the Eagles. Back in March he signed a one-year deal to return for a record 15th season with the Birds, saying he, his wife Carlyne and their children — 8-year-old Emerson and 5-year-old Bryson — have “built a life here.”

“I am glad I haven’t moved around much because of the kids,” Graham told the Eagles website. “It has been good staying in Philadelphia.”

That Philly stay has included being named to the Pro Bowl and being among the core of vets who led the Eagles to the team’s only Super Bowl win.

Graham on Monday said even as his football career comes to an end, his work in the community is just beginning.

“I think it is just a start,” Graham said. “Yeah, this is my last year as a player, but I got so much more to offer this city and, you know, we only scratching the surface. Because when I’m done I expect to be here, still working for the team.”

Graham hobnobbed with current Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as well as former Philadelphia Mayor and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.

Monday night’s affair — described as “a pep rally like no other” — at the Independence Visitor Center in Old City also featured music from Philadelphia faves SNACKTIME and “a pep-rally atmosphere with festive food from the city’s best chefs and restaurants,” the PVCC said.

Tickets to the event were on sale for $125 each.

Eagles Autism Challenge is ready to fly: Your guide to 2024 event https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/2024-eagles-autism-challenge-may-18/3861716/ 3861716 post 7065569 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2022/04/Eagles-Autism-Challenge-Photo.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Girls flag football is officially a recognized sport in the state of Pennsylvania thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Eagles and Swoop host annual Huddle Up for Autism fundraiser at the Linc https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/eagles-autism-huddle-up-lincoln-financial-field/3837544/ 3837544 post 9478190 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/04/Huddle-Up-for-Autism-Eagles.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Eagles were huddling up for a good cause on Sunday.

From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests made their way to Lincoln Financial Field for the team’s annual Huddle Up for Autism fundraising event.

The event was designed to be low-sensory so everyone can participate and join in the festivities.

Everything from live events, to locker room tours and special appearance by Eagles players, cheerleaders and Swoop are just some of the things that were available.

“I think it’s a great place for kids to come together. It’s nice to see them active. I like that there’s resources here that parents have access to,” Patience Burton of Abington said.

This fundraising event happens every year and is in celebration of April’s Autism Awareness Month. All proceeds will go to the Center for Autism Research at CHOP.

“Anything that helps to raise money for any organization that’s trying to make things better. Cancer research or in this case, autism research, because that one hits home for us, is just amazing,” Britney Peterson of Blackwood told NBC10.

Leading up to this year’s event, over $203,000 was raised. That number tops last year’s total of $139,708.

“At the Center for Autism Research at CHOP, research translates to clinical care. And so the funds that we raise today help us to do research projects so that we can give clinical care to all of the families here today,” Neuropsychologist Juhi Pandey with the Center for Autism Research said.

Officials say that the annual Huddle Up for Autism fundraiser has raised over $1 million for autism research and care programs since it started in 2009.

Eagles' Jalen Hurts donates $200K for new air conditioning at Philadelphia schools https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-jalen-hurts-donates-air-conditioning-philadelphia-schools/3836406/ 3836406 post 9473747 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/04/jalen.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts is giving back to the community.

The quarterback has donated $200,000 to fund air conditioning at several schools in the School District of Philadelphia.

Officials said this donation will help add more than 300 air conditioning units in 10 schools across the district, aiming to provide comfort to classrooms and avoid disruptions to school days during the warmer months.

“I believe every child deserves a comfortable space to learn and grow,” Hurts said. “Philadelphia has given me so much, and I’m excited to give back to the community in a way that supports our future leaders. Ensuring our schools are equipped with essential resources like air conditioning is one step toward helping our students achieve their very best.”

The 10 schools are Clara Barton, Gloria Casarez, Castor Gardens, D. Newlin Fell, Thomas Finletter, Fitler Academics Plus, Benjamin Franklin/Science Leadership Academy, Edward Gideon, Abram Jenks and T. Roosevelt.

“We are incredibly grateful to Jalen Hurts for his generosity and commitment to our schools, our students, and our employees,” said Tony B. Watlington, Sr. Ed.D., Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia. “This contribution not only enhances the physical infrastructure of our schools but also demonstrates a meaningful investment in our student’s well-being and academic success. As temperatures continue to rise in Philadelphia, we know that air conditioning can significantly influence the learning experience.”

Officials said the District has been working over the years to upgrade the air conditioning systems. Since 2022, more than 40 schools have received either central A/C systems or full window unit installations.

Dorney Park lets roller coaster fans ‘drop' 160 feet for Eagles Autism Foundation https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/entertainment/the-scene/dorney-iron-menace-roller-coaster-eagles-autism/3835358/ 3835358 post 9470556 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/04/Dorney-Iron-Menace-drop.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Roller coaster fans are about to “drop” in on a new Lehigh Valley roller coaster for a cause.

On Wednesday, Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom Allentown on Wednesday gave a sneak peek of one of its newest rides — the Northeast’s first-ever dive roller coaster, the Iron Menace.

Iron Menace features a 160-foot-high, 95-degree drop and speeds up to 64 mph across a brand-new steel track. The ride includes four inversions including a tilted loop — the first of its kind for a dive roller coaster — and pays homage to the industrial history of the Lehigh Valley.

You can check out the full video on Dorney Park’s YouTube page.

Ride Iron Menace while supporting Eagles Autism Foundation

Dorney Park opens for the 2024 season on May 10. However, you can get a first chance to ride the Iron Menace on Friday, April 19, during the Ride for a Cause event.

“Dorney Park is hosting an Iron Menace Ride for a Cause event benefiting the Eagles Autism Foundation, with one hundred percent of the ticket proceeds going to the organization,” the Allentown theme park said.

Admission to the Iron Menace Ride for a Cause range from $75 to $250.

Food, the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders, mascot Swoop and Q&A with one of the Birds are among the offerings — besides riding the roller coaster — Friday night.

Hurts attended Channel View High School in Houston, a known rival to North Shore High School.

Jarvon Coles, a senior and North Shore High School football player, was found unresponsive at a party with a gunshot wound Saturday night.

After learning of his passing, Hurts decided to pay for the funeral expenses, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Kyle Herridge, one of Coles’ coaches, shared a statement on X following the devastating news:

“You cannot measure the impact [Jarvon] had on and off the field in our program. Truly an incredible human being. Prayers needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff and the entire North Shore community. Rest easy Jarvon Coles.”

Braxton Coles, Jarvon’s grandfather, told KHOU11 he had been accepted into 15 colleges and planned to play football at Lamar.

As CJGJ returns, a look at 25 other players who had multiple Eagles stints https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/nfl-players-multiple-eagles-stints/571103/ 3802743 post 9372927 Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/03/image-82-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all With C.J. Gardner-Johnson returning to the Eagles after a year with the Lions, we started thinking about other players in Eagles history who’ve left, played for another team and come back to Philly.

We thought about a list of 10, and it quickly got to 20 and we finally cut it off at 25.

One rule: It’s not enough for guys to get released and return. To be eligible for this list, they must have spent some time with another team, either in practice or in a game. So Eagles -> Other team -> Eagles.

Some of these guys were stars. Some you might barely remember. But they all had two stints with the Eagles. Just like CJGJ.

Note to Brett Toth fans: Sorry. He can be first alternate.

Jason Babin: Didn’t do much in his initial stay with the Eagles in 2009, recording 2 ½ sacks in 12 games, but after a year with the Titans returned in 2011 and recorded 18 sacks and made the Pro Bowl. Was released midway through the 2012 season.

Shawn Barber: Started 16 games at linebacker in 2002 (two interceptions, one sack, three forced fumbles), and after three years with the Chiefs returned as a backup in 2006.

Kenjon Barner: Spent 2015 and 2016 with Eagles, mainly as a returner, then spent training camp 2017 with the Chargers. Was released and returned to the Eagles and was returner and backup running back on Super Bowl champions.

Derek Burgess: Eagles’ 3rd-round pick in 2001 left after 2004 season, made Pro Bowls for the Raiders in 2005 and 2006, and returned in 2010, playing in one game, the final game of his career.

Irv Cross: Spent first five seasons with the Eagles, making Pro Bowl in 1964 and 1965. Was with Rams from 1966 through 1968 before returning to Eagles as a starter in 1969 before retiring and becoming first African-American sports analyst on national TV.

Vinny Curry: Eagles’ 2nd-round pick in 2012, had 22 sacks through 2017 before signing with Bucs. After one year in Tampa, returned in 2019 and had eight more sacks over two seasons.

Hugh Douglas: In first go-round with Eagles from 1998 through 2002, Douglas had 51 ½ sacks in just 66 games and made three Pro Bowls. Played in Jacksonville in 2003, returned for final NFL season with Eagles in 2004.

A.J. Feeley: Eagles’ 5th-round pick in 2001, went 4-1 in five late-season starts to help Eagles reach playoffs while Donovan McNabb was hurt. Had stints with Dolphins and Chargers before returning to Philly from 2006 through 2008.

Nick Foles: Eagles’ 3rd-round pick in 2012 had a historic 2013 season with 27 touchdowns, two interceptions, seven TDs vs. the Raiders and a 119.2 passer rating. After single seasons with the Rams and Chiefs, returned to Eagles in 2017, replaced injured Carson Wentz, led Eagles to Super Bowl LII win and was named MVP. Has been with Jaguars, Bears and Colts since.

William Frizzell: Steady safety started 68 games from 1986 through 1990. After 1991 with the Bucs, returned as a backup and special teamer, finishing his career with Eagles in 1992 and 1993.

Jeff Garcia: Went 5-1 with a playoff win after McNabb got hurt in 2006. Spent next two years with the Bucs, then finished 16-year career (including five years in CFL) with the Eagles in 2009, playing one game without throwing a pass.

Jerome Harrison: Averaged 6.0 yards on 40 carries for Eagles in 2010 after mid-season trade from the Browns. Began 2011 with Lions but was traded back to Eagles in October for Ronnie Brown. Trade was voided when physicians discovered that Harrison had a brain tumor that required surgery. Never played football again. Brown’s rights reverted to the Eagles.

Wes Hopkins: After 12 seasons with the Eagles – 29 interceptions, 125 starts, 12 sacks and one Pro Bowl – Hopkins was released at the end of training camp in 1993. The Chiefs signed him and he had an interception off Drew Bledsoe five days later in a preseason game. The Chiefs then released him and the Eagles brought him back for one final season in an Eagles uniform.

Jordan Howard: Eagles acquired Howard from the Bears before the 2019 season, and he ran for 525 yards and a 4.4 average with six TDs in 10 games. Howard signed with the Dolphins that offseason but averaged only 1.2 yards on 28 carries and was released. He rejoined the Eagles and spent the rest of 2020 and all of 2021 with the Eagles, averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

DeSean Jackson: In first six seasons, averaged 1,020 yards per season and 17.2 yards per catch with 32 receiving TDs and four more as a punt returner, and made three Pro Bowls. After three years in Washington and two in Tampa – and two more 1,000-yard seasons – returned here in 2019 and 2020 but was limited to just eight games, with 23 catches for 395 yards and three TDs. Third in franchise history with 6,512 receiving yards.

Kenny Jackson: Fourth pick in 1984 draft averaged 23 catches for 413 yards with 11 TDs in initial six-year stint with the Eagles. Spent 1989 with the Oilers, returning to Philly in 1990. Caught five passes for 72 yards in 32 games in second stint. Averaged 23 yards in 93 games as an Eagle.

N.D. Kalu: Eagles’ 5th-round pick in 1997 played only three games as a rookie. Spent next three seasons with Washington, was back with Eagles from 2001 through 2005, picking up 18 ½ sacks in 61 games. Finished career with three seasons in Houston.

Sean Landeta: One of the great punters of all-time, Landeta was already 15 years into his career when he joined the Eagles in 1999. Spent four years here and then two years with the Rams before rejoining the Eagles late in 2005 after Dirk Johnson got hurt. In his 21st NFL season and 24th pro season including his three years with the USFL Stars, Landeta had his highest lifetime net average (38.2) in his final season at 43 years old.

Dorsey Levens: After eight years and one Super Bowl ring with the Packers, Levens signed with the Eagles to back up Duce Staley in 2002 and had 411 yards with a 5.5 average. Played for the Giants in 2003, then came back to Philly in 2004 and rushed for 410 yards backing up Brian Westbrook. His 4.9 average is 3rd-highest in Eagles history among running backs.

Chad Lewis: Began career as an undrafted rookie backup tight end with the Eagles in 1997. Was released midway through 1998 and signed with the Rams. After they cut him, he came back to Philly, played six years, caught over 200 passes – and two TDs in 2004 NFC Championship Game – and made two Pro Bowls.

Jordan Matthews: Eagles’ 2nd-round pick in 2014 caught 224 passes for 2,673 and 19 TDs in three seasons. Traded to Bills before 2017 season for Ronald Darby. Returned to Eagles in 2018 and caught TD in postseason loss to Saints. Began 2019 with 49ers before returning to Philly for a third stint.

Hank Baskett: Undrafted receiver began career with Eagles in 2006 and caught 71 passes for 1,046 yards in three seasons, with TD catches of 87, 89 and 90 yards. Played for the Vikings in 2009 and returned to Eagles in 2010 but didn’t catch a pass in two games.

Josiah Scott: The Eagles acquired Scott from the Jaguars in 2021, and he played 29 games here in 2021 and 2022 but was released in the summer of 2023. Signed with the Steelers and was on Pittsburgh’s practice squad before the Eagles brought him back in October. They released him later in the season and he’s now back in Pittsburgh.

Jeremiah Trotter: Trott had three stints with the Eagles – 1998 through 2001, 2004 through 2006 and again in 2009. Made two Pro Bowls in each of first two stays here and was a 1st-team all-pro in 2000.

Julian Vandervelde: In between getting released by the Eagles eight times between 2011 and 2015, Vandervelde spent some time with the Buccaneers – and got released two more times. In all, he played 18 games with the Eagles, almost all on special teams.

Kylie Kelce to speak at final graduation for her alma mater Cabrini University https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/kylie-kelce-graduation-2024-cabrini-university/3801978/ 3801978 post 9371387 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/03/Kylie-Kelce-Cabrini-College.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Cabrini University is celebrating one of its beloved alums while celebrating its final graduating class this spring.

Kylie Kelce — wife of retired Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce and the unofficial first woman of Philly sports — will speak at Cabrini’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19, 2024, the Radnor-based college said Tuesday.

Kelce, a 2017 graduate and 1989 graduate Dr. Rachel Slaughter will both address Cabrini’s 64th and final graduating class.

In a Facebook post, Cabrini described Kelce as a “standout field hockey athlete and coach, and advocate for girls and women in sports.” Kelce will address undergrads in the morning.

“One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to become a part of the Cabrini field hockey family,” Kelce told Cabrini’s website. “The experience gave me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Cabrini’s Facebook post described Slaughter as an “educator, author, and international speaker on global literacy issues.” Slaughter will address graduate students receiving master’s and doctoral degrees in the afternoon.

Don’t just expect to role onto campus and into the ceremonies, as Cabrini notes “both events are by invitation only.”

This May marks the end of Cabrini after it was founded in 1957.

‘I'm here, look at me': NJ vet's daughter – a nurse – and positivity guide him in cancer battle https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/health/im-here-look-at-me-nj-vets-daughter-a-nurse-and-positivity-guide-him-in-cancer-battle/3801095/ 3801095 post 9368213 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/03/NJ-veteran-battling-cancer-with-help-from-his-daughter-a-Penn-Medicine-nurse-and-Eagles-cheerleader.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Aside from the nurses and doctors who work there, Abraham “Abe” Bren might know the halls of Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center better than anyone. He’s currently battling cancer for the fourth time, after also surviving a heart attack.

“I’ve been a professional sick person for the last 12 years,” Abe told NBC10. “You know, the place becomes your house.”

The U.S. Air Force veteran has survived a triple bypass, prostate cancer, and kidney cancer, which then spread to his lungs. He’s undergone different treatments throughout the years, beginning when his daughters were in high school in South Jersey.

“It’s hard when you’re everything to a family and all of the sudden everything stops,” Abe said. “It’s very frustrating.”

After supporting her father through his appointments and hospital stays, Abe’s daughter Gabriela “Gab” Bren decided to become a nurse. Now, she works on the oncology unit where her dad gets treatment.

“I didn’t know that it was something I could handle, because it was so close to home,” Gab said. “But I actually think it gives me a little bit of an advantage, because I can connect with my patients in a little bit of a different way.”

Abe’s doctors say his daughter’s medical knowledge goes a long way. And, it’s helped him get care faster.

“She keeps him honest,” Dr. Naomi Haas, professor of medicine at Penn, said. “He’s sometimes reluctant to complain about symptoms.”

Another factor contributing to his success, according to his doctors, is Abe’s positive attitude.

“He’s always upbeat,” said Dr. Haas. “He’s not afraid to ask hard questions about his care and about his prognosis and things…he’s just really got an incredible positive attitude.”

Gab said that attitude has earned him a bit of a reputation on the oncology unit.

“He definitely has a spirit about him when he meets new people,” the younger Bren said. “Everyone will always text me, like, ‘I’m taking care of your dad today!’ if I’m on a different floor or something.”

She said while it’s been difficult to watch her father go through so many health challenges for so many years, it’s brought their family closer.

“Not many people would be willing to go through as much as he’s gone through, and still maintain that positive mindset that he has,” Gab said. “It’s definitely something that I admire a lot and he’s really inspiring.”

Not only has Gab inherited her dad’s positive mindset, she’s also inherited his passion for performance. Abe sings with a Salsa band on weekends, while Gab performs as a Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader.

“I love being on stage, I love entertaining,” Gab said. “That’s definitely something that I get from him.”

Abe believes his choice to continue singing through treatment, has helped his prognosis.

“If I die on stage, I’m gonna die happy,” Abe said. “It’s what makes me happy.”

And his doctors don’t disagree. Dr. Haas said having a passion and something to work toward can have a significant impact on patients’ health outcomes.

“I think that Abe is a really good example of how if you have a passion you should follow it,” Dr. Haas said. “If you have a passion that kind of keeps you going, it could be music, it could be exercise, all of those things are really helpful for patients in fighting their cancer and keeping a positive attitude.”

She said Abe’s cancer seems to be responding to therapy, and expects him to do well for “many years.”

For Abe, that means more time with his two daughters and wife. He hopes throughout this journey, he’s given them a dad — and an outlook — they can lean on.

“Things that happen in life, you just tackle them and keep going,” Abe said. “And I’m here, look at me.”

A $2.5 billion transformation is coming to South Philly Sports Complex https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/transforming-south-philly-sports-complex-2-and-a-half-billion/3787910/ 3787910 post 9333350 Comcast Spectacor https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/xfinity-plan-1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 UPDATE: The Philadelphia Phillies have partnered with Comcast Spectacor on the plan. New details here.

There’s a new $2.5 billion plan to transform the South Philadelphia Sports Complex in the coming years.

The plans include upgrades at Xfinity Live!, a 5,000-square-foot concert venue, a new hotel, shopping and restaurants.

Léelo en español aquí

These plans are being considered as “phase 1,” according to a spokesperson from Comcast Spectacor.

Phase 1 will take place in what is currently Lots G and H at the Sports Complex.

“We think we have a great opportunity right here in the sports district,” Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor Dan Hilferty told NBC10. “Really focused on bringing people to this area in addition to times they come for games, concerts, other activities and making it a destination.”

Comcast Spectacor wants tailgaters to know that there is no reason to worry.

“We’re going to make sure that we balance development with not losing the things that make this region so great,” Hilferty said

The concert venue is expected to hold over 5,000 seats and be built in Lot G.

The hotel will be open to both fans of sporting and entertainment events as well as visitors of the City of Brotherly Love.

There are also plans in motion for apartments and office space but nothing’s concrete there yet. These plans would be part of a “phase 2” and would possibly include connections to FDR Park.

“Come here not only to live, not only to attend games and concerts but to make a thriving neighborhood that is really an anchor in the South Philadelphia area,” Hilferty explained. “I think it will be good, like a breath of fresh air, new restaurants, new stores.”

Some fans in South Philly were excited to hear about the improvements.

Others, like the general manager of the Philadium, shared concerns about how the development might impact local businesses near the complex.

“If there’s no reason for people to step outside of the sports arenas and venues, I think the rest of the neighborhood suffers,” Jamie Kelly said.

Meanwhile, one woman we spoke with praised the plan hoping it might convince the Sixers to stay in South Philly.

“I don’t think it should be changed from how it is. I think everything being in one place is awesome,” she said.

A spokesperson for 76 DevCo said the development plans have no bearing whatsoever on their plans to move to Market East when their lease expires in 2031.

Still, Comcast Spectacor said they hope the Sixers might consider sticking around.

“The hope would be that the Sixers remain here as our 50/50 partner,” Hilferty said.

The goal is for construction on the hotel and event venue to begin sometime in 2025 or 2026.

Comcast is the parent company of Comcast Spectator and of NBC10.

Eagles fans ready to tee off as golf balls fly from seats at The Linc https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/upper-deck-golf-lincoln-financial-field-eagles/3781240/ 3781240 post 9575302 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/05/The-Linc-Lincoln-Financial-Field-outside-sign.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 After sports fans of all golf skills took their shots around Citizens Bank Park this past fall, Upper Deck Golf is heading across Pattison Avenue to the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The golf event where people shoot from spots around the stadium will take place at Lincoln Financial Field this spring.

Here’s everything you need to know to get in on what Upper Deck Golf calls a “once-in-a-lifetime golfing experience.”

When can Eagles fans take golf swings at The Linc?

Upper Deck Golf flies into the Linc from Thursday, May 30, to Sunday, June 2, 2024.

What is Upper Deck Golf?

“As part of the Upper Deck Golf event, fans will have a chance to play a round of golf throughout Lincoln Financial Field with custom greens on the field, while enjoying great music, cold drinks, food, and multiple golfing challenges at a clubhouse bar and festival area inside the stadium,” the Eagles wrote.

Playing golf at an earlier upper Deck Golf event at Citizens Bank Park.

This writer tried out the previous upper Deck Golf event at the Phillies ballpark in fall 2023 (just look at the photo above). The event played out just how organizers said it would over 9 holes set up where seats were temporarily removed around the ballpark.

How do golfers get a tee time at The Linc?

Pairs of golfers can take swings from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on each of the four days of the Upper Deck Golf takeover, organizers said.

There are both standard and VIP tee times offered.

Each tee time features a round of golf, clubs and balls amid special stadium access. You also get access to purchase drinks at the clubhouse bar and take your turn at golfing challenges.

“VIP tee times provide a more premium experience for fans looking to enjoy additional perks at the event, including free entry into driving, chipping, and putting challenges and complimentary food and beverage items,” the Eagles wrote.

Registration opened at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2024, after golfers signed up for the waitlist.

Can I bring my own golf clubs?

Yes, but leave the big clubs at home.

“Standard clubs will be available for players to use at each tee box,” organizers said. “While guests are welcome to bring their own clubs, no drivers or fairway metals will be allowed within the stadium for safety purposes.”

Eagles expanding girls flag football league, sports bra initiative https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-girls-in-sports-flag-football-sports-bras/3769028/ 3769028 post 9280559 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/Eagles-flag-football-girls.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Wednesday is National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s a chance to announce a major expansion of the team’s commitment to getting girls in the game. And, NBC10 was first to share exclusive details.

From its very first day, the flag football league for girls founded by the Eagles has been a hit.

Launched in 2022, the Eagles Girls Flag Football league began with 16 teams. Now, the Birds are announcing their league has expanded to 96 teams — a nearly 600% increase in just two years’ time.

“It’s really for us just about making sure that everyone has access to play,” Eagles Youth football community relations manager Dan Levy said. “Just excited to get all these girls on the field and see these leaders.”

Championship games are held at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex. Kickoff to start each season is held on the grass at Lincoln Financial Field itself.

We here at NBC10 have seen these games up close. And, the impact of this league on area girls is undeniable.

“It feels amazing,” Abington flag football QB Maya Johnson said. “I feel like I’m a part of the Eagles… they give us this opportunity to play on the field.”

But, that’s just half of the Eagles announcement.

This past summer, star quarterback Jalen Hurts and U.S. soccer legend Carli Lloyd headlined the announcement of the Eagles Fly Forward (FLY:FWD) initiative. It’s a plan to provide 30,000 sports bras so girls who need the essential sports equipment to play.

Tuesday, the Birds are announcing that total of sports bra donations is doubling to 60,000.

“I became such a confident young girl because of sport,” Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion Lloyd said. “And, I always showed the boys that I could play better then them, so that was a lot of fun.”

The Eagles also will announce the expansion of girls coaching and learn to play clinics — all with the mission of providing opportunity for girls in sports.

“We wanna show that these girls can be.. anything they want,” Levy said. “This just starts with giving them the confidence that they can do whatever they want, when they want.”

Eagles Autism Foundation to give $6.2 million to 34 research and community projects https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-autism-foundation-to-give-6-2-million-to-34-research-and-community-projects/3765027/ 3765027 post 9268258 NBC10 https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/02/Eagles-Autism-Foundation.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The birds are doing great work for the community off the field.

The Eagles Autism Foundation announced Thursday that 34 projects specializing in “cutting-edge autism research and care” will receive $6.2 million in funding.

The proceeds all come from last year’s Eagles Autism Challenge as well as other foundation-related fundraising initiatives.

Drexel University and Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania are among some of the local programs that will receive funding for research.

Additionally, local organizations that are “actively enhancing the lives of those affected by autism” will receive funding such as A Step Up Academy, Center for Autism, Center for Autism Research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Ken’s Krew and Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support.

“The purpose of going through this rigorous process each year is to fund the most progressive forms of autism research and care,” Chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles Jeffrey Lurie said in a news release. “A scientific review panel made up of some of the world’s brightest minds and thought leaders, led once again by Dr. DiCicco-Bloom, carefully vetted each proposal with tremendous detail and precision. We congratulate the institutions and community-based organizations that were selected this year and hope their innovation inspires others to continue supporting the autism community in transformational ways.”

The 7th annual Eagles Autism Challenge will take place on Saturday, May 18, according to the organization.

Nick Sirianni explains top priority for Eagles' next offensive coordinator https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-news/nick-sirianni-explains-top-priority-for-eagles-next-offensive-coordinator/560999/ 3756372 post 9244850 Getty https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/GettyImages-1764061894-e1706154528774.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 When looking for an offensive coordinator last year, a priority was finding someone who had a great relationship with Jalen Hurts.

You can’t get anybody closer than Brian Johnson, a family friend since Hurts was a toddler.

Now the Eagles have to find a better fit.

Family friend or not, Johnson is out after one year, and the biggest task for the Eagles’ next offensive coordinator will be getting more out of Hurts, whose play dropped off from his MVP level of 2022, especially during the season-ending seven-game slide.

So it’s not enough just to hire a new offensive play caller. He’s got to mesh with Hurts the same way Shane Steichen did.

“You want there to be comfort with Jalen, whoever is the new coordinator, and so obviously just like I talked to Howie (Roseman) about it, just like I talked to (passing game coordinator) Kevin Patullo about it, I’ll talk to Jalen about that as well,” Sirianni said. “You’re in constant communication with your players, especially your quarterback, and so we’ll talk through everything.

“I’ll keep him aware of things that he needs to be aware of and keep him in the loop of that because he’s our guy, and it’s really important that those two guys are going to work hand in hand to make sure we’re getting back to where we need to be.”

It sounds like whoever the new offensive coordinator is will have broader control of the offense than Johnson did last year.

The unwieldy combination of Johnson calling plays for Sirianni’s scheme left the entire offense clunky, unimaginative and – to use Sirianni’s word on Wednesday – “stale.”

Not surprisingly, Hurts suffered more than anybody from the unusual structure.

The new coordinator, the Eagles’ third in three years, will only be successful if he gets Hurts back playing at his 2022 near-MVP level.

So far, the only known candidates are former record-setting Texas Tech quarterback and one-time Cards head coach Kliff Kingsbury and record-setting Texas A&M quarterback and current Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.

Both come from a high-flying passing scheme and both have experience working with outstanding young quarterbacks. Kingsbury coached Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech and Kyler Murray in Arizona during his Pro Bowl seasons, and Johnson coached 22-year-old C.J. Stroud to a record-setting rookie year this past fall.

Whoever winds up as the new coordinator will need to work with Hurts on improving his blitz recognition, speeding up his release, getting his pocket awareness back to 2022 levels and reducing his interceptions.

“We’re all going to have things that we need to work on, and Jalen is no different than any(body),” Sirianni said. “We’re all going to look at the things from the season and say, ‘We need to work on this or we need to work on that.’

“The one thing I do know about Jalen is when there are things (in) his game that he needs to improve, he goes to work and he busts his ass to do that.

“I think there were a lot of questions after (2021) about, ‘Could he be (an NFL-caliber) passer,’ or whatever the questions were, and he came out and put together an MVP-type season the following year. Just the way he threw the ball, the way he delivered the ball, accuracy, all those different things, he just continues to grow.

“I said it last year a bunch. I don’t know if we know what this guy’s ceiling is because he’s going to work and do everything that he needs to do to get better.”

Hurts’ accuracy dropped a bit from 66.5 percent to 65.4 percent, passing yards dropped from 247 to 227, yards per attempt fell from 8.0 to 7.2 and interceptions multiplied from six to 15.

But he still had the 2nd-most total touchdowns in the league with 38 (behind Josh Allen), the 2nd-most rushing first downs in the league (behind Christian McCaffrey) and joined Tommy Thompson, Ron Jaworski, Randall Cunningham and Donovan McNabb as the fifth Eagles quarterback to take three straight teams to the postseason.

“For 11 weeks this year, he was on top of the MVP talk,” Sirianni said. “We all had a bad stretch through the last portion of it. In fact, there were games, like even though we were in a bad stretch as a team, I thought Jalen was playing really good football.

“I have no doubt about (Hurts) because I’ve seen him do it. I’ve seen him do it over and over again, and I look forward to him doing it … this offseason with all the things that we talk about for all of us to improve on.”

Report: ‘All signs point to' Nick Sirianni staying with Eagles https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-news/report-all-signs-point-to-nick-sirianni-staying-with-eagles/559904/ 3752460 post 9233470 Getty https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/GettyImages-1928399721-e1705794347639.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,214 Nick Sirianni, whose job status has been the subject of intense speculation since the Eagles’ 32-9 wild-card loss to the Bucs on Monday night, will likely remain Eagles head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter said during halftime of the Ravens-Texans game, “All signs point to him staying with the Eagles.”

He added, “Right now, Nick Sirianni has a job and it’s trending that it’ll stay that way.”

Schefter indicated that, as expected, there will be changes on Sirianni’s coaching staff. Sean Desai and Matt Patricia both served as defensive coordinator and it would be a shock if either one is back. First-year offensive coordinator Brian Johnson’s future is also unknown.

Schefter did specifically indicate, “There are expected to be changes on the defensive side of the ball.”

Sirianni and owner Jeff Lurie were scheduled to meet Friday to discuss Sirianni’s vision for the future in the wake of one of the greatest collapses in NFL history.

The Eagles became the second team in NFL history and the first in 37 years to start a season 10-1 and not win its division or win 12 games.

They went 1-5 in their last six regular-season games, losing to the 49ers and Cowboys by 23 and 20 points, losing to the Seahawks on a 92-yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes after leading by 10 points in the second quarter, losing to the 3-12 Cards after blowing a 15-point lead at home and losing to the Giants after falling behind 24-0 in the second quarter.

Then they suffered the 2nd-worst playoff loss in franchise history against a team they had beaten by 14 points earlier in the season.

The Eagles’ only win after Week 12 was against the Giants at the Linc and they had to hang on in the final seconds after nearly blowing a 17-point 3rd-quarter lead. The only quarterback they beat after Week 12 was undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito, who was benched at halftime.

The only coach in NFL history fired after coaching at least three years and never missing the playoffs is John Fox of the Broncos, fired after four straight seasons after the 2014 season.

Sirianni’s 34-17 career record is best in Eagles history, and he’s the only Eagles coach ever to take his first three teams to the postseason.

A local McDonald's worker is in her celebrity era after befriending Jason Kelce https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/jason-kelce-signs-mcdonalds-worker-jersey/3750943/ 3750943 post 9229349 NBC10 Philadelphia https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/kelce-fan-split-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Imagine getting a job at your local McDonald’s only to realize your all-time favorite Eagles player is a semi-regular customer at your drive-thru window.

Well, that’s what happened for a worker in Broomall who now has a great story to tell and a signed jersey from her Eagles idol Jason Kelce, as originally reported by TODAY.

Hundreds of cars come through the drive-thru at the McDonald’s at Sproul Road and now Danielle Bonham is enjoying her celebrity moment.

Bonham is in her celebrity era because she has befriended her favorite Eagles player who first came to her window back in the summer.

“I started freaking out and hyperventilating and crying,” she told NBC10.

As you would expect, Jason Kelce was super nice and down to earth with Bonham and the entire team at this McDonald’s location.

“He’s always really nice. We say ‘Hey Mr. Kelce, can we take a picture?’ He always says yes,” general manager Rossano Casaccia said.

As Bonham tells us her “first autograph of his is on a McDonald’s paper bag.”

Kelce always orders the same thing and Bonham has his order memorized.

“Two sausage egg and cheese McMuffins and depending on the weather if it’s cold out, he will get a large, hot black coffee and if it’s warm, a large iced coffee,” she said.

Once Bonham’s boyfriend finally got her that Kelly green jersey that she always wanted, and knowing that Kelce might be retiring, she kept the jersey in a protective bag at McDonald’s hoping that he would pull up to her window to sign it.

Which he did with a smile on Wednesday.

Bonham is a great Eagles fan and a smart lady, so when she had a chance to say something to Kelce, she did us a little favor when she told him he didn’t have to retire yet.

She gave Kelce a couple of gifts for him and his wife, and while she’s not sure if he’s done playing she doesn’t think he needs to be done with the Eagles.

“Maybe assistant coach Kelce? Who knows!” she said.

But, Bonham is holding out hope that her McMuffin man wants to keep playing.

“If you’ve got one more in you I’m all for it, let’s go. And if not, I commend you for everything and wish you nothing but the best,” she said.

Eagles legend Jason Kelce to retire after Hall of Fame career, per report https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/eagles-center-jason-kelce-to-retire/3747527/ 3747527 post 9220076 Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/GettyImages-1928402362.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Girls flag football is officially a recognized sport in the state of Pennsylvania thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Eagles vs. Buccaneers wild-card betting guide: Lines, odds, props & picks https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-vs-buccaneers-wild-card-betting-guide-lines-odds-props-picks/558732/ 3746682 post 9198467 Mike Carlson/Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/web-240108-jalen-hurts-run.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Eagles and Buccaneers will close out wild-card weekend with a Monday night showdown, a rematch of a Week 3 matchup that saw the eagles win handily, 25-11. A great deal has changed since then. Let’s see if we can close it out with some profit.

Eagles at Buccaneers, 8:00pm

Point spread/ML: Eagles -3/-160     Buccaneers +3/+130

Total points: 43.5

Analysis: Tampa comes in with a ton of momentum, having closed out the regular season on a 5-1 run. But three of those wins were against the 2-15 Panthers (twice) and the 7-10 Falcons. The Eagles have none of that momentum, finishing out 1-5 after a 10-1 start.

Picks: Buccaneers ML; OVER 43.5 points

Passing Props (O/U)

  • Jalen Hurts – 215.5 passing yards; 30.5 attempts; 19.5 completions
  • Baker Mayfield – 230.5 passing yards; 1.5 passing TDs; 32.5 attempts; 21.5 completions

Analysis: Both QBs are dealing with injuries; Hurts with a dislocated finger and lingering bone bruise in his knee, and Mayfield with injuries to his ankle and ribs. They were both limited at practice this week. Similarly, both Hurts and Mayfield are coming off terrible games in their respective regular season finales. Darius Slay’s return from injury will help the Eagles’ secondary, but they lost safety Sydney Brown (knee) and Reed Blankenship is questionable with a groin injury.

Picks: Mayfield OVER 230.5 yards; OVER 1.5 TD

Rushing Props (O/U)

  • Rachaad White – 65.5 yards
  • D’Andre Swift – 60.5 yards; 15.5 attempts
  • Jalen Hurts – 40.5 yards
  • Kenny Gainwell – 15.5 yards
  • Chase Edmonds – 10.5 yards

Analysis: Swift ran for 130 yards on 16 carries back in Week 3 against TB. The Bucs will likely key on Swift, but Sirianni will keep pounding the rock. Rachaad White nearly got to 1,000 yards this season, but he ranks 44th in the league in yards per carry (3.6). Edmonds has gone over 10.5 in his last five games.

Picks: Swift OVER yards, OVER attempts; Edmonds OVER yards; Hurts UNDER yards

Receiving Props (O/U)

  • Mike Evans – 70.5 yards; 5.5 receptions
  • DeVonta Smith – 70.5 yards; 6.5 receptions
  • Chris Godwin – 55.5 yards; 5.5 receptions
  • Dallas Goedert – 50.5 yards; 5.5 receptions
  • Trey Palmer – 25.5 yards
  • Cade Otton – 25.5 yards
  • Rachaad White – 20.5 yards
  • Julio Jones – 15.5 yards
  • Olamide Zacchaeus – 15.5 yards
  • Quez Watkins – 15.5 yards
  • D’Andre Swift – 10.5 yards
  • Kenny Gainwell – 10.5 yards

Analysis: Godwin has had 50+ yards in each of his last five games. White has gone over 20 yards in 10-of-12. With AJ Brown out (knee), look for Hurts to lean heavily on Smith and Goedert, as well as Julio Jones.

Picks: Godwin OVER yards; White OVER yards; Smith OVER yards, OVER receptions; Goedert OVER yards; Jones OVER yards

Anytime Touchdowns

  • Jalen Hurts -125
  • Rachaad White -120
  • Mike Evans +100
  • D’Andre Swift +175
  • DeVonta Smith +190
  • Chris Godwin +240
  • Dallas Goedert +240
  • Julio Jones +375
  • Eagles D/ST +400
  • Buccaneers D/ST +475

Analysis: Aside from Hurts, this feels like an “anything can happen” sort of game. Cade Otton (+425) leads the Bucs with 4 red zone TDs. White is the Bucs’ goal line back, with 30 of the team’s 42 red zone carries.

Picks: Hurts, Otton, Smith

Jalen Hurts and Co. will visit the New York Giants in Week 18. It’s the second matchup between the NFC East rivals in a three-week span, and the last showdown marked the Eagles’ only win dating back to November.

The Eagles followed up their 33-25 victory over the Giants on Christmas Day with a catastrophic 35-31 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on New Year’s Eve. Matt Patricia’s defense had no answers in the second half, surrendering touchdowns on all four of the Cardinals’ second-half possessions en route to blowing a 15-point halftime lead.

Despite losing four of their last five games, the Eagles still have a shot to become the first team to earn back-to-back NFC East titles since 2004. They need a win over the Giants and a win from the Washington Commanders over the Dallas Cowboys.

The danger in football mercenaries https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/the-danger-in-football-mercenaries/555968/ 3735880 post 9188107 Getty Images https://media.nbcphiladelphia.com/2024/01/image-46-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all There are certain words and catch phrases Nick Sirianni uses constantly. Core values. Connecting. Culture.

These are concepts that genuinely mean a lot to him. They form the basis of his coaching philosophy, that the closer players are to each other and their coaches, the harder they’ll play for each other.

Just a few weeks after Sirianni was hired here, I asked him about connecting, why it’s important to him.

“When you really know somebody and you connect with someone, you’re going to go a little bit harder for them,” he said back in the spring of 2021. “And you always get guys who say, ‘I already go as hard as I possibly can. I go 100 percent every day,’ and that’s probably true most of the time, but there’s still something more there and something extra that you’ll give when you care for somebody.

“Guys who know each other and like each other and respect each other, you don’t want to let your teammates down.”

And I think there’s something to that. I really do.

You still need good players. You still need good coaches. And it doesn’t hurt to have an easy schedule. But the notion that players who have a powerful personal bond among each other will fight just a little bit harder during tough times is real.

Another reason it’s critical to draft well. When your roster is packed with homegrown talent, you get this dynamic where guys have come in together, learned about their team’s culture from Day 1 of OTAs and haven’t been exposed to any other way of doing things.

Kelee Ringo was telling me the other day how close he, Sydney Brown and Eli Ricks are. Three rookie defensive backs, all going through the same things together at the same time. All figuring out the NFL way of life, how to handle their finances, who to trust and who not to trust, and so on.

There’s so much value to that. Those guys are born and raised Philadelphia Eagles. The team that believed in them enough to draft them or sign them.

The bonds between Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson and the bonds between Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham are unbreakable and will last long after their football days are over.

And ask yourself why guys like Clyde, Seth, E.A. and Keith Byars are all still so close. Why Trott, Dawk, Troy and Ike are all still best friends.

But there is a flip side to all this.

The guys who haven’t grown up here. Who haven’t built those connections. Who’ve spent most of their career elsewhere and don’t have those strong ties to the organization that the home-grown players have.

Every team has free agents and some of the best Eagles in history have been guys who’ve come from other teams – Asante Samuel, Malcolm Jenkins, Troy Vincent, Jon Runyan, Brandon Brooks. But those are guys who were here long enough to buy in. To become part of the fabric of the team.

What can be risky is bringing in too many older veterans who really have no sense of what it means to be a Philadelphia Eagle, who haven’t grown up in the NovaCare Complex, who are outsiders stopping off here long enough to finish out a season and pocket a few more weekly checks before figuring out their next team.

And when I see how the Eagles are falling apart right now, losing to inferior teams, blowing double-digit leads, scrambling to win games in the final minutes, I can’t help wonder if that’s part of the problem.

There are so many guys who weren’t here for OTAs or the offseason programs or training camp, guys who never had the chance to assimilate into the culture that helped the Eagles get to a Super Bowl a year ago. They got here and went out and played a few days later.

And this isn’t a knock on the players themselves. Older veteran midseason defensive acquisitions like Kevin Byard, Bradley Roby, Shaq Leonard and Zach Cunningham – and you can throw Julio Jones in there as well – aren’t bad guys. They’re not bad locker room influences. Cunningham has actually been the Eagles’ best linebacker this year, and Jones has three touchdowns.

It’s more a statement on roster construction and the importance of developing young players who want to hang out with each other after practice, go bowling together, build relationships that will last a lifetime.

There are actually 30 players on the 53-man roster or practice squad who were drafted by other teams. And guys just passing through the building as a stopping point from one team to another aren’t going to have the same bond as guys who’ve grown up here and built those connections over time.

If you’re playing football for the Eagles and you weren’t here a few months ago and you won’t be here a few months from now how can it mean as much as to guys who’ve spent their whole lives here? And with each outside guy you bring in, your locker room can drift just a little farther away from the culture you’ve been working so hard to instill.

Now, because of injuries and disappointing play, GMs sometimes have no choice but to bring in mercenaries. But the difference in the NFL between winning and losing is tiny, and when things get tough, when adversity hits – and it’s hit big-time around here lately – you want as many people as possible with 100 percent buy-in on your side.

Guys who love being Philadelphia Eagles. Not guys just stopping by for a few games.

And what happens when you don’t have that? What happens when there are cracks in that painstakingly built culture? Just look at the last six weeks for your answer.
